A peek into the kitchen: the benefits of knowledge management

Many of my friends already know this: visiting Floor means there will be plenty of treats on the table! I truly enjoy spending time in the kitchen baking cookies and cakes. "She has it all figured out," you might think. But nothing could be further from the truth. Anyone who takes a look at my cookbook shelf would probably be shocked. Between the books, all covered with sticky notes, you'll also find a tangled collection of clippings from various cooking and baking magazines.

Everyone organizes knowledge in their own way

It works for me, but many people would never dare to use my "system." And that's perfectly understandable. Everyone has their own preferred way of organizing things, in this case recipes. Take my sister, for example. She also loves being in the kitchen, but instead of collecting paper recipes, she keeps them all in one place: digitally in an app.

When knowledge becomes scattered, chaos follows

These differences may seem harmless, and you might think: just do whatever works best for you. And in the safe environment of my own kitchen, that's perfectly fine. However, that chaotic shelf I mentioned can also be found in organizations. Not literally, of course, but figuratively. Organizational knowledge is often scattered across people's minds, folders, and various systems. And just like with my recipe shelf, there is usually no single, consistent way of making that knowledge available to others. When clear agreements are lacking, chaos is free to take over. And knowledge happens to be a critical organizational asset that should never become a victim of chaos.

How to make knowledge shareable and usable

Unfortunately, the solution is not as simple as implementing a system to store knowledge. Effective knowledge management requires more than just a suitable system that employees can consult. It is equally important to establish clear agreements about when, where, and how knowledge is recorded, accessed, and maintained within the organization. By doing so, knowledge in your organization becomes not only shareable but also truly usable.

Bring order to your knowledge landscape

Fortunately, my kitchen is a very small, one-person organization, so the chaos on my shelf can continue for a little while longer without causing major consequences. That said, I won't deny it: when it comes to knowledge management in my kitchen, I still have a lot to learn... Isn't it time to organize the recipe shelf in your own organization? Get in touch with us, and we'll help you create a coherent and effective knowledge landscape.

P.S. How do you prevent employees from skipping crucial steps because they think they already know what to do? In the next blog, I'll share a valuable madeleine lesson from my own kitchen.

Kind regards, Floor
